Gerhart Hauptmann, Nobel prize winner of the year 1912, found his inspiration on Hiddensee, the small island off Rügen, called the “Capri of the North” in the Twenties. He had discovered this treasure back in the summer of 1885 and was buried in the monastery on Hiddensee when he died in 1946 at the age of 83.

Visit Heimatmuseum with exhibitions dedicated for fishing culture, seafaring, monastery history and artist colony. Redesigned a few years ago, the permanent exhibition tells a comprehensive and vivid account of the life of the people on the island.

The lighthouse on the Dornbusch , which was commissioned in 1888, is Hiddensee's landmark. Its light shines from a height of approx. 100 m above sea level about 45 km out onto the open Baltic Sea and provides an important orientation for coastal navigation. The 28 m high tower is originally a round brick building.

In addition to the island's wedding room, the Asta Nielsen House houses an exhibition on the Danish silent film diva Asta Nielsen and the architect Max Taut. The house was built in Vitte in 1922/23 as a summer home for the Richard Müller family in Berlin. In 1929 Richard Müller sold the holiday home to the famous Danish actress Asta Nielsen.
