It’s time to hit the road, maybe the red one this time. Australian travel has been put on the back burner for years as we all explored the world, but maybe it’s time to find out what’s happening in our own backyard.
Off the beaten track lies Mataranka. Approximately 450 km from Darwin next to near nothing is the ancient Indigenous town.
Made famous by the Australian book We of the Never Never, the township’s closest neighbour is Katherine. But while small in size and population, Mataranka makes up for it in beauty and activities.
Most well-known for the hot springs, the idyllic swimming spot is nestled among the natural limestone. Six large karstic springs are located in Mataranka and are the perfect spot to unwind all day. There’s a choice between ones that have been a bit more landscaped for guests or another a little more rough, with the banks spilling into the pristine, crystal clear water.
